So, which comes first - decluttering or cleaning?
If you’re looking to get started on organising your home, I would focus on decluttering first. Your first port of call is to make space to clean. You want to take away anything you don’t want to put back after cleaning an area that could do with a good edit. By decluttering first, you will save time cleaning as you’ll have less to move out the way and return back to its place.
If you want to test run your first attempt to declutter (I promise, it’s not as hard as you think!) the fridge is always a great place to start. For an area that is reasonably small, it can hold onto a lot of items that we no longer need, are out of date and taking up precious real estate. You want to make space first before you attempt to clean it. It’s not the most fun of jobs, which I can totally appreciate but you do feel much better for it once it’s done. No one wants to restock a fridge with delicious new food that is surrounded by food that has gone off. Use the fridge template in other areas of your home. The same theory can be applied to toys. Keep on top of them so new toys can be enjoyed and toys that no longer serve a purpose to your family can be donated to new homes.
If you’re looking to get started but the thought is overwhelming you, start by getting rid of anything that you could categorise as rubbish. This could be flyers left in the hallway or leftover birthday celebration bits and bobs such as deflated balloons or used and broken cake candles. Another easy one in the kitchen is water bottles, especially children’s plastic bottles. They usually have teeth marks on them and after a while, you probably deem them no longer fit for purpose as they’ve been cleaned in the dishwasher one too many times. I now buy stainless steel water bottles which last much longer than plastic ones. Bottle lids tend to be misplaced so this is a handy area to focus on first.
Keeping your living space organised can make a huge difference, not only in how you manage your belongings, but also in boosting your mood and productivity. I know it can feel overwhelming to get started, so start your decluttering journey when you have the headspace to do so and remember, it’s not something you have to tackle alone.
