ORGANISING MY HOME - WHERE DO I START?

A stack of books in an organisation unit, declutted and organised into a neat pile

The best way to start decluttering? Start with the easy wins.

When deciding what order to declutter your home in, I always say, start with the easy wins. By starting with the “easier areas” I mean, start somewhere which is easier to declutter and then tidy up. By doing this, you’ll gain confidence and momentum. Usually a drawer of doom is a good place to focus on as there’s only so much ‘junk’ it can hold due to space limitations, which means you’ll get a quick results return. There’s usually a drawer of doom in the rooms that are in most regular use, such as the kitchen and living room. Focus on that particular room once you’ve organised your first targeted area.

When I work in clients' homes, I can quickly identify where their spending trends are, and I suggest that they swap out their dopamine fix through shopping by decluttering their home instead. Even more satisfaction and happier vibrations guaranteed!

Why should I declutter?

Having less clutter is a win win. You’ll start to think twice before making a purchase. Once you begin to see a difference, that in itself becomes addictive as we can always do with more space. You’ll also get to donate clothes or toys to a good home, and more than anything, you’ll know that everything now has a place. If you’re really lucky, you’ll find things you thought had long gone! There are so many benefits to decluttering and organising your home, but you won’t know these until you make a start.

What do I need to start decluttering?

When you start to declutter your home, make sure you have the following set up:

  • A donation box

  • A rubbish bag

  • A recycling bag

  • Time

Time boxing is an essential way to stay focussed so I suggest anywhere between 30 to 45 minutes to declutter a space. Start by taking everything out to create categories, so instantly, everything has a home to go to, even if it’s temporary.

Try to keep focussed and remember you’re up against the clock which will help to motivate you even more. If it’s a drawer that you haven’t been in recently, the likelihood is that it’ll be full of belongings you no longer need. Put your phone on aeroplane mode to minimise distractions.

Top Tip: Try putting your phone on aeroplane mode for 30-45 minutes to help you avoid distractions.

Start your decluttering journey when you have the headspace to do so. I always feel inspired to give my home a good sort through during the ‘in between seasons’ like Autumn and Spring. Autumn in particular is a great time, the kids have gone back to school and after a long summer, you’re probably nesting ahead of winter. A home organiser can help to motivate you by coming into your home, with fresh eyes and energy. They will be able to troubleshoot how you’re working with your home storage, whilst suggesting new ways to optimise a space, through clever storage solutions or by supporting you with your decluttering journey.
